一封申请海外学校的推荐信 | OEC徐鹏老师诚意推荐

今天,OEC关注的是海外学校就读申请问题,OEC专注社会实践和服务学习多年,课程遍布世界各地,也充分研究过海外学校的招生关键,6年来也为许多OEC学员打开过通往海外的指引大门。

就在前几天,徐鹏老师诚意为OEC一位学员撰写了申请海外学校就读的推荐信,该学员参加了OEC课程总计九次,徐老师对这位学员印象深刻,每次从课程中总能发现该学员的十分满意的部分和值得改进的地方,并通过各种方式引导学员发挥各方面的能力,使她在各种场景下,慢慢培养出了解决问题和适应环境的能力!

在我决定推荐张同学的时候,我知道作为一家专注中国 儿童青少年全人成长的教育机构的负责人在担当着一个重要的使命。我清楚地记得第一次见到张同学是在 2014 年的暑假,她报名参加我们 OEC 的「行走乡村」教育发展项目(吉林 波泥河村),那个有着漫山遍野玉米地的小山村,还不到十一周岁的她是一个人乘坐飞机来到超过二千公里外的陌生城市和我见面 了,至今印在我脑海里的印记就是“谈话腼腆,爱用手指缠卷长长的秀发,笑眯眯的”,妈妈透过微信和我相识,张同学是第一次参加我们的课程,老师们需要了解她的秉性才更能更好地和她相处......

可是就是这第一次,张同学和 OEC 的缘分就一发不可收拾: 在接下来的二年零八个月里,张同学先后九次参加我们的课程,从中国最北端的额尔古纳,吉林到最南端的海口和广西的南中国海边,从江西的长溪、湖北的恩施到云南的喜洲、贵州的黔西、丹寨,足迹随着我们遍布中国的东南西北,和我们的课程一道观察 了多元的文化,体验了无数民间习俗,触发了张同学广泛的思考和行动......我和所有的课程老师每一次都会赞叹她和一般孩子的不同:她总是能将对于人类最美好的愿景融入学习的过程中来,她也经常显得安静,但总能和团队的伙伴友好相处。

记得在第二次参加课程时,同学们推举这个“不太言语”的小姑娘做小组的一个副组长,她在课程结束的报告会上带领小组成员报告研究成果,结束后她高兴地说“我虽然很紧张,但我们小组还是做到 了!”我们看到她和成员之间形成的良好的协作,以及善于思考, 有自己的独立的判断,而这些,正是我们后来更多课程中发现她的最关键的品质:对人友善、深邃的独立思考能力,以及超强的学习能力。她的父母也耐心细致地关注着这个具有特别潜质的孩子的成长,每一次取得卓越的成就,我们透过妈妈低调的分享中,都能感受到他们对孩子的那些努力,我们也相约见面来共 同分享孩子成长的那些独特经历,使得我们的老师能更好地在不同的课程中理解和推动了张同学的进步。此刻,那些课程的场景又一次在我的脑海中浮现,一帧一帧,真像一部电影,令我感动而 美妙。

我想我陈述一个具体的事例将更有助于对张同学这些独 特的气质的理解。我愿意用第一个跳出我脑海里的词来介绍这个故事,尽管学习能力强、反应快、能快速采取行动、独立思考和关爱环境等一定是我首先想到的。但她最大的长处将被我看成是积极的独立思考和关注社区发展(关爱他人/友善)的品格,以及超强的学习能力。在我们的课程研究中,我认为她具有超出同龄人和环境打交道的内心力量,而她的积极地探索精神和独立思考能力使她又具有良好的可迁移的学习能力。这些长处将会帮助她在新的学习环境里建立适应性。记得去年冬天在贵州黔西的课程上,她和小组成员共同完成一个服务学习项目:《共同解决一个乡村小学的阅读问题》,让我们第一次从一个中学生的视角观察了中国农村社会问题,“可以透过广泛的知识流动解决乡村孩子的阅读问题”的观点,这样的思考对于一个中学生来讲不仅十分难得,而且简直就是经典:在现代中国,互联网已经覆盖了中国的绝大部分乡村,但那里的孩子依然还没有图书馆,没有合适的书籍,也没有阅读指导......她们小组在第一天独立拜访村民、 学生和乡村教师得到的近乎令人崩溃的阅读数据既增长了她们和陌生人打交道的能力,也使她们下定了帮助那里的孩子建立一间图书馆的决心,他们调研到那里的孩子完全没有读过一本课外书籍,没有阅读空间,没有老师指导阅读......之后他们在课程老师的指导下,深入地调查研究了当地学生的课外学习的实际情况以及阅读的真实需求,她们编制了预算,小组成员共同发起了众筹,他们亲自粉刷了一间教室,他们夜以继日地安装桌椅,编制书目,整理图书,他们用零下的冰冷的水跪在地上擦拭粉刷墙面滴落的涂料......他们最后完美地帮助那里的小学交付了一间小型图书馆。我每每回忆起这些课程经历都会感动,感动于同学们攥着小拳头坚定地对着镜头说的那些话:“每一个环节都特别有意义!”是的,他们和这里的社区建立的关系使他们的生活变得有意义。

我还了解,张同学获得过学校多个学科教学的“卓越贡献 奖”,以及在学校发起过评估两个班级的差异研究,这份研究旨在推动八年级升班时重新分班,让同学们公平享受教学资源和同学资源,不要有好坏班之分,令人感动的是,她本人其实是在所谓的“好”的那个班级,她用在 OEC 这些课程中学习的数据分析方法,用事实和数据,讲真实的话,关爱他人的品质,都留给我们最深刻的印象。

张同学如果有机会在贵校就读,基于贵校的熏陶和教导, 我认为她最大的提升空间除了高中阶段专业的学术风格将提高她的个人学术能力外,她将有机会继续发挥她的如下潜能:基于社区的公共服务学习和独立思考能力;建立多元的交往和提升领导力,关注公平和建立信仰以及让自己更加国际化等。

如果她能在贵校读书,贵校师生也会和我一样感受到她的积极、友善、关注她人的优秀的品质。我相信她依然会继续愿意和同学分享她的思考和独立观点,体贴她人让人感到温暖:也会在新的环境里建立适应,表现出她的积极和坚毅,以及她因能独立冷静做出适合的判断而显示出的组织和领导能力。而这些技能和品格,通过在贵校的成长和提升,都将为她个人和学校赢得尊重。

她还一直向我申请作为我们公益项目的自愿者,做我课程的助教,和我一同拜访中国更多的乡村,我承诺她在她有更多的学术能力和思考准备时,利用假期,参加我们的社区行动,以帮助更多的中国农村孩子和城市的孩子一样,免于贫瘠,享受自由。

Recommendation letter
 
Dear Sir and Madam;
As the director in chargeof an educational institution focusing on the well-rounded growth of the children and adolescents in China, when I decided to recommend Zhang, I knew that I was playing an important role. I clearly remember the first time I met Zhang in the summer of 2014. She enrolled in OEC's (Our Education ofChina) Project "Walk & Think” in the Bonihe Village of Jilin Province,a small mountain village with rolling hills and vast corn fields. She was less than eleven years old then, yet she flew alone to an unfamiliar place more than 2000 kilometers away to meet with me. I still remember how she spoke softly and smiled. Since then, Zhang has been tightly connected with us.

Over the next three years, Zhang participated in our programs nine times. Together we have nearly been all over China, from the mountains to the seas, from the northernmost to the southernmost border. We observed the multiculturalism of China and experienced countless folk customs. All these triggered Zhang’s extensive thoughts and actions.Every single time, my colleagues and I are impressed by her thoughtful and promising vision of human well-being,which distinguishes her from her peers.

Zhang often seemed quiet, but was always friendly with her teammates. I remember on her second trip, her teammates elected Zhang, “the quiet girl,” as a deputyleader of their group. She led her group members to report the research results at the end of project. Afterwards she said happily, “Although I was nervous,our team finally made it!" We noticed she cooperated well with teammates,was good at thinking and had her own independent judgment. All these areexactly what her most crucial qualities as we got to know her more: kindness,independent thinking and superb learning ability. In our project studies, she possesses an inner power that goes beyond her peers to adapt quickly to a new learning environment. The power will benefit her in the future. Her strivingsto improve her performance, her great achievements every time, touched me sobeautifully like a movie in my memory.

A specific example will be more helpful to demonstrate her unique characteristics. Although the firstwords that popped into my head are “quick response and execution capability,”“critical thinking and superb learning ability,” and “environment-protecting awareness,” I think her greatest strength is how she thinks positively and independently to help the development of the community and people in need. I remember she and her group members completed a project named, “Solving thereading problem of a rural primary school.” The goal of the project was to observe the social issues in rural China from the perspective of the middle school students. Though internet has covered most rural areas in modern China,the reality is that the children in rural areas still do not have a library —no proper books, and no reading guidance. Zhang’s group was shocked by their survey of the villagers in Guizhou, Qianxi. There was no reading material, no reading time, no reading space for the local students. They reached aconclusion that the reading problem of rural children can be solved withknowledge sharing and spreading. Such insight is not common or easy to come up with for a middle school student. Under the guidance of the project mentors,they decided to build a library for the local kids. They proposed the budgetand raised the funds after in-depth investigation of the real needs of local students. In a cold winter, they painted an old local classroom, kneeled down to wipe the dripping paint on the floor with icy water, installed tables andchairs with their frozen hands, and sorted the books they brought. They ended up delivering a perfect small library to the primary school! It is so touching that at the opening ceremony of the library, Zhang and her teammates emotionally but firmly said, “Every step is so meaningful!” Yes, the relationships they established with the local community will make their lives more meaningful.

I know that Zhang has won outstanding achievements in different subjects at her school. She also initiated a study on the difference between two classes in her school. The study aimed to re-locate the students for G8 so that each student has fair access to teaching resources without being labeled as an “advanced class” or“standard class.” It is touching that Zhang is actually in the so-called“advanced” class. She used the knowledge learned from our programs, such as data analysis methods, to tell the truth. Her caring for other people has impressed us profoundly.

If Zhang has a chance to study in your school, in addition to the improvement of her academic ability, she will have the opportunity to continue to develop the following potentials: improving public service skills for the community, building diverse communication and leadership skills, focusing on fairness and establishing faith, and becoming a global citizen.

Zhang is such a positive,kind and considerate young lady that everyone around her values her characters deeply. I believe that people in your school will feel the same way if she is accepted. I believe she will be willing to continue sharing her thoughts and independent views with her classmates, to be considerate of others, to show her positivity and perseverance, to demonstrate her organization and leadership ability through her independence, calmness and appropriate judgments. All her skills and characters will grow in your school and will earn respect and honors for her and your school in the future.

She has been applying for avolunteer for our charity project, a teaching assistant, and visiting more villages in China with me. I promised her that when she is more academically mature, she can participate more in our projects in her free time to help morerural Chinese children enjoy freedom and be wealthy materially and spirituallylike children in cities.

It is for these reasons,and many more that I would like to sincerely give my highest recommendation to  Zhang.

海外一流学校的申请竞争很激烈。中国很多学生学习成绩非常优异,即使在激烈的竞争中也可以脱颖而出。但在综合素质方面,尤其是社会实践经历却普遍缺乏。这种情况一方面是由于中国学生由于学业压力大,对社会接触少造成的,另一方面也由于我们的基础教育方式重理论和轻实践。海外学校在录取学生时,特别关心学生参加过哪些有意义的社会实践活动,例如服务社区、做义工、到企业实习等等。如果学生希望申请到国外读书,那么最好提早做好这方面的计划和准备。假期相对平时来说,课业负担较轻,时间也更充裕,学生可以利用这样的时机多参加社会实践,为自己的申请材料积累素材。
